FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES

LATIN 1

8th-12th grades

Students in Latin 1 (using Cambridge Latin Course 5e, Unit 1 and Unit 2) will be introduced to the Latin language, complemented by background information on Roman culture and civilization. From the first page, students learn the workings of the Latin language by translating an interesting, involved, and sequential story line involving real people and events in the history of Rome. This method offers students a means to learn much of the grammar intuitively to build a solid foundation for learning and memorizing more complicated grammar concepts. Students will master rudimentary grammatical concepts, basic Latin vocabulary, and translation skills needed to successfully read, translate, and comprehend Latin texts specifically created to practice these skills. Students will also explore many aspects of Roman life and culture.

Online Requirements: Students will practice their Latin grammar and translation skills using Duolingo, review vocabulary and other culture terms using Quizlet, and complete daily assignments, quizzes, and tests in Canvas. It is essential for students to have access to a computer or tablet to complete these requirements.

Grading Expectations: Students are expected to complete all assignments in the week they are assigned and to check their answers with the key provided in Canvas (usually embedded in the assignment) and make note of questions to discuss in class.

Mrs. Patton will grade quizzes and tests.

National Latin Exam and Competition: Students will sit for the Beginning Latin Level of the National Latin Exam in February or March. Students will also have the opportunity to compete in competitions with the Texas State Junior Classical League.
