SCIENCE CLASSES
LIFE SCIENCE
Middle School - 7th grade
This course is designed to be a preparatory class for high school biology and is taught at a pace that can be followed by students new to the study of science along with those who consider science their favorite subject. Students engaging in classes outside the home often struggle with time management and organization. We will focus on developing good study habits while we learn about all the interesting facets of Life Science. Topics will include cells, heredity, genes, bacteria, viruses, protists, fungi, plants, animals, many human body systems and more. As always, we will be learning and exploring science in a way that glorifies God’s marvelous creation and embraces our Catholic faith. Students should expect to devote 30-45 mins four times a week to their study of life science. Canvas will be utilized for assignments and tests. Class time will focus on review of the material, labs, activities and discussion.
There is a chapter about reproduction. Your student can “opt” out of class that week if you prefer. I have the chapter scanned in a pdf for parents to preview. The majority of the focus is on fetal growth and genes and “nothing to make you squirm in your seat”. I’m happy to discuss it.
Science is amazing!!!! My goal is to share the love of science with everyone!

PHYSICAL SCIENCE: INTEGRATED PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY
Middle School - 8th grade
God created the universe to follow amazing laws designed by Him! This course will teach the students about those laws! This is a course designed to prepare middle school students for the high school level sciences.
Integrated Physics and Chemistry is traditionally composed of one semester of chemistry and one semester of physics. Because math is so integrally involved in these sciences, it is recommended that the students be concurrently enrolled in Pre-Algebra or have already completed that math course. Students will be expected to read the textbook at home and complete the textbook comprehension questions. Students should also have access to the internet to watch reinforcing videos and complete online virtual labs. Students will keep a notebook for organizational and learning purposes. Class time will be used for some lectures and class discussions, but it will mostly involve hands-on activities and labs designed to bring the scientific concepts to life!
Tuition: $50 per month for 9 months ($200 per semester after registration deposit)
Supply fee: $60 includes the loan of a textbook that will be ordered by the tutor, and must be returned by the student at the end of the year.
Number of Students: minimum 5, maximum 10
Required text: Prentice Hall/Pearson Physical Science: Concepts and Challenges, 2009 edition. This is a newer version of the text used by Mother of Divine Grace. Textbook will be provided by the tutor and must be returned at the end of the year.
Required Supplies: Scientific calculator, three-ring binder with 16 pocketed dividers.
Tutor: Amy McDermott
BIOLOGY
High School - traditionally 9th-10th grades
God created all living things with order and complexity, and they are AMAZING! This course will aim to inspire the students to be in awe of God’s marvelous creation. Class time will be used for a combination of lecture, class discussion, learning activities, laboratory experiments, and dissections. Students will be expected to pre-read the text and complete vocabulary and comprehension questions at home to reinforce their reading so that class time can build upon and strengthen their at-home learning. Students will be asked to keep a notebook for organizational and learning purposes. Students should also have access to the internet to watch reinforcing videos or complete online virtual labs. We will complete units covering the scientific method, biochemistry, ecology, cells, and genetics. Then we will begin to study the different kingdoms of living things: bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals. We will use every opportunity to incorporate our Catholic faith into our study of the fascinating world of living things!
Tuition: $60 per month for 9 months ($240 per semester after registration deposit)
Supply fee: $65 includes a workbook that will be ordered by the tutor
Class Size: minimum 8, maximum 15
Required text: Pearson Biology by Miller and Levine, 2010 on-level edition. ISBN-13: 9780133669510 (When purchasing from Amazon, I recommend searching by the ISBN number.)
Required Supplies: Three-ring binder with 16 pocketed dividers

CHEMISTRY
High School - 10th-12th grades
Chemistry is a great course that combines science concepts and math, providing an opportunity for students to grow their thinking skills. Each chapter builds on the previous chapter to provide a thorough understanding of the basics of chemistry. The text is arranged in a logical order and provides clearly presented examples and problems. The course will cover all 16 chapters of the text to ensure students have a solid understanding of chemistry in preparation for more advanced collegiate level sciences.
Students will be expected to keep up with reading material at home, complete fill-in-the-blank notes by watching the videos made by the tutor, perform laboratory experiments at home and in-class, complete lab reports, and work practice questions based on the text. Class time will be used for a combination of lecture, class discussion, and laboratory experiments. Homework will require the use of Canvas and other online applications.
Prerequisites: Successfully completed Algebra I. Concurrent enrollment in Algebra I and Chemistry is not recommended unless your student has strong math skills. To ensure that students can succeed in the math portion of chemistry, all students are required to take a basic algebra placement test and submit it to Mrs. Hemmi for grading. This test can be taken before or after registration, but students will not be guaranteed a place in the class until the placement test is passed. After students successfully complete the placement test, Mrs. Hemmi will notify the registrar, Sondra Mullan, to officially approve students for this course.
Tuition: $60 per month for 9 months ($240 per semester after registration deposit)

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY
High School - 10th-12th grades
High School Anatomy and Physiology will be offered at two levels of difficulty. Track 1 will be for students interested in pursuing a career in a medical specialty (nursing, medical doctor, and PT/OT) or desiring to take a challenging science class. Track 2 will be a high school-level science for students who want a high school science credit and/or want to learn more about the human body but will not pursue a medical specialty. The tests, quizzes, and expectations will differ between the two levels.
In this course, students will learn about the awe-inspiring anatomy and physiology of our body's 11 organ systems, including the reproductive system. To accomplish this, the Modules will include two video PowerPoint presentations. The PowerPoints will help the students grasp the material and Labs more thoroughly. There will also be multiple hands-on activities in class, including dissections (eye, heart, lung, trachea, kidney, bone/joints, brain, rat), microscope labs, and student presentations. The students will also explore diseases using X-rays, CT scans, and other visual aids.
Come explore the human body and see the wonders Our God has "knit in your mother's womb!"
I will grade Quizzes, Tests, Lab Notebook, Lab Reports and presentations. Student/Parent will check OYO and Study Guide questions.
(Module 1 is a quick review of General Biology. Students must do the OYO and Study Guide Questions before the first class. There will not be a Module 1 Test.)
